Science and technology are the keys to both our longevity and our demise; our entire existence on this planet is a double-edged sword.
Dr. Ashaq Hussain
Science and technology play an increasing role in our lives and has affected every aspect of human life in such a way that at present it is strange to even think about the existence of life without science. The modern generation is totally dependent on science and is experiencing every moment of their lives in the shadow of science and technology. Today, the separation of science from all spheres of life feels as if clothing has been separated from the human body. Although science was interested in the laws of nature, while Technology applies scientific knowledge to make new things, but now these new things i.e. new machinery is being used to “dominate” human as well as nature on the pretext of improving human life. Experts have been debating the issue of science and technology for years as whether, technology has come to make human life easier and can its downsides be ignored. Over the years, technological advances have led to a dramatic increase in pollution which has become a major cause of many health problems. In addition, it has cut people off from society instead of connecting them.
The intrusion of science and technology can be seen in everything from a tiny cellular organ to the larger corners of the universe. Modern advances in astronomy and gene technology, have added to the wonders and sometimes the average person avoids thinking about these manifestations of progress because doing so can lead only to distress to them and nothing else. For many people, stepping on the moon is still considered to be a lie and a theory of conspiracy because for these gentlemen, this task seems to be possible for human only today, but thirty or forty years ago it was impossible. Recently, under NASA's Mars Rover Mission, three rovers were sent to the surface of Mars to investigate traces of life on the surface of Mars. Although no positive news has been received so far, there is a strong possibility of a human step on the surface of Mars in the near future. On the other hand, if you look at DNA Recombinant Technology, you will be amazed that even with such a large body, penetrating into the finest material like DNA is probably not a dream. An amazing source of information is DNA in the form of a thread, which is about six feet long inside a human cell. If the DNA of all human cells were combined, its length would be about 11 billion kilometers, which is more than seventy times the distance of the earth from the sun. It is said that if a typist typed the acronyms representing the nucleotides of DNA at the rate of 60 words per minute for 8 hours a day, then the DNA of only one cell can be written in fifteen years without any rest or holiday. Whereas the book that will be made from it, if it has five hundred words on one page and a total of 1000 pages, then 280 books will be made which will contain information of only one cell. Science and technology have successfully stepped into amazingly vast sea of information and are constantly coming up with new discoveries that outline a complete scheme to have a profound effect on human life. The typical development of man in the field of genetics has raised the spirits to such an extent that man is constantly working on cloning, that has raised fears of numerous biological and moral problems for the future. While genetically modified organisms, developed with the help of biotechnology, are useful to human in many aspects but they have a lot of disadvantages on other side. In this way, while science provides innumerable comforts to human life, it also acts as a source of gradual decrease in relief and tranquility in human life. Consider the cell phone as an example, there was a time when people used to visit and meet in order to get information and the wellbeing of each other but today all this is being done with the help of electrical signals as a result relationship no longer exists and now everyone is cut off from one another because of cell phones. This cut not only harms the individual but also hurts the spirit of the society.
The advancement of science will completely change human life is no longer just a fear, but has become a reality now. The dangers that man used to fear in ancient times are now replaced by the dangers of science and technology. For example, if ancient humans were at risk of natural disasters, they are now replaced by fears of scientific dangers and disasters like nuclear weapons, environmental warming, artificial intelligence and genetically engineered viruses. Man has built a web of fear and anxiety around himself because of his own products, and trying to get out of these makes him more trapped. Can you imagine that an LED TV mounted on the walls of a bedroom in a home is actually an informer who keeps inspecting your room and through which all your information can reach to the hackers. Our cell phone is also our stool pigeon who keeps a check on human privacy. Therefore, in the future man will have to try to control science as much as he has to use science to control the resources available in the world today. In the future, man will continue to be affected by technology at all times and in all places. With the evolution of technology, man will risk his evacuation, his safety as well as his dignity. In short in future, man's battle will be with science and technology. Although today man is using science and technology in war, in the years to come man will be in direct competition with drones, robots and other such tools. What man had thought and wrote as fiction is beginning to emerge as reality today and what is shown in fiction movies today is going to become a reality in the near future. Evolving technologies such as industrial robots, artificial intelligence and machine learning are rapidly gaining traction in all walks of human life.
On one hand these scientific advances has improved speed, quality and value, but at the same time has disrupt the services of countless human beings, leading to the risk of a severe crisis. Today technology advanced sex dolls are sounding the alarm for devastation of human society and there are even fears that in the future this man will also get married to the sex dolls which needs not to be cared or feed. Artificial intelligence is another threat to man in the future. Experts believe that if man develops a super intelligent machine that is capable of combating human intelligence, then the existence and importance of man in this world will be over. Man has established his dominance over all other creatures in this world on the basis of his intelligence, now, if a machine is made so intelligent that it can compete with all human abilities, it will inevitably endanger human existence. Today more and more machines are being built that are automatic which do not require so much human control, and there is a great deal of efforts to make them as autonomous as possible. In future, these automatic machines will come to the market on a large scale that will do everything without a human being.
In short to conclude with it can be said that Science and technology has a profound impact on all of human activities. Science and technology inventions and discoveries, including the theory of the origin of the universe, the theory of evolution, and the discovery of genes, have given humanity many hints relating to human existence from civilized and cultural points of view. Science and technology have had an immeasurable influence on the formation of our understanding of the world, our view of society, and our outlook on nature. The wide variety of technologies and science discoveries produced by humanity has led to the building and development of the civilizations of each age, stimulated economic growth, raised people’s standards of living, encouraged cultural development, and had a tremendous impact on religion, thought, and many other human activities. The impact of science and technology on modern society is broad and wide-ranging, influencing such areas as politics, diplomacy, defense, the economy, medicine, transportation, agriculture, social capital improvement, and many more. The fruit of science and technology has filled every corner of our lives. However, the relationship between science and technology and society is assuming many ugly shapes with the changing times. Against the backdrop of the historical turnaround in the world structure, and with accelerating scientific and technological progress, as exemplified by the life sciences and IT, it is no exaggeration to say that society is transforming abruptly and daily becoming more complex and unpredicted. This transformation as per the public opinion polls has raised concern over the safety and security of society. Thus in the present, addressing directly the relationship between science, technology and society is an essential challenge. If we continued to develop our technology without wisdom or prudence, our servant may prove to be our executioner.
