Jammu, June 28: The litchi growers of Wand Ghai village of Marh block in Jammu region have been anticipating losses due to ongoing lockdown and low growth of fruit production this season.
The villagers alleged that in the past, contractors mostly came from outside states and from Punjab to take litchi orchards on lease, besides reserving them by paying in advance to farmers, but this year no one came in Jammu due to corona virus pandemic.
Dev Raj a local farmer said, “We are harvesting Litchi fruits at the moment, but this year we have low fruit production owing to lack of pestisides from Punjab due to pandemic, rest weather was also unpleasant resulting in damages to crop.”
Sewa Ram and Chotu another farmer said, “Due to unpleasant weather, the fruit crop damaged and fall from trees in large scale. We are expecting high losses as spray were also unavailable. We urge government should come forward to help us.”
However, on other hand due to no migrant labour, locals got opportunity to work and earn in this difficult times of pandemic, “We are taking the opportunity of jobs in the absence of migrant laboures this year and earning good labour as earlier we were unable to get opportunity of earning. We want local people should be given opportunity of work in the orchards so that they can also earn in this difficult times.” a female labourer said.
Director Horticulture Jammu region, Ram Sewak said, “Like previous years, we have good litchi production this year too and as far as the spray or pesticides are concerned we have not received any single complaint from any corner.”
